CROMWELL, CT (WFSB) - Celebrities hit the links on Wednesday for the Travelers Championship Celebrity Pro-Am.
Fans were able to see the likes of sports figures, athletes, personalities, and actors at the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell starting at 6:50 a.m.
The field included sports personality Chris Berman, actor Bill Murray, Today show host Dylan Dreyer, former University of Connecticut men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun, UConn woman’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma, former NFL quarterback Doug Flutie, former MLB pitcher Tim Wakefield, and more.
“Our Celebrity Pro-Am field will add to an excellent week of golf,” said Nathan Grube, Travelers Championship tournament director. “We’re looking forward to welcoming fans on-site starting on Wednesday and giving them a chance to watch a fun event with stars from the worlds of sports and entertainment.”

A Celebrity Mini Golf tournament also took place Wednesday at the Stanley Black & Decker Fan Zone. It featured local celebrities and charity representatives. The winner of each wave received $2,500 for the charity of their choice.
Live at the practice tee, Eyewitness News got the chance to meet some of the stars in attendance. Quite a few celebrities golf, including some famous comedians.
Bill Murray, for one, is back at Travelers. Though he played a groundskeeper in his film Caddyshack, Murray is a golfer. He takes it seriously, too.
UConn basketball star Donovan Clingan also attended the event.
Eyewitness News asked Murray if he’d watched a lot of basketball this year. “No,” he said. “I didn’t. It was a slow year.” When asked how many years he’d played this tournament, Murray responded, “I don’t know. I mostly play the parking lot.”
Murray is actually a big basketball fan. His son, Luke Murray, is an assistant basketball coach at UConn.
This year, Donovan Clingan is attending Travelers for the first time. “First time at a gold tournament,” he said. “To be at the best, it’s exciting.”
Clingan also expressed his enthusiasm in supporting the famous fans of the sport. “The biggest of the biggest celebrities are right there,” he said. “We thought we would come out and support them today.”
Eyewitness News spotted Murray, wearing a white bucket hat, getting a hug from UConn Head Basketball Coach Geno Auriemma. Eyewitness News asked Auriemma if he would wear a similar hat. Auriemma responded, “You have to be a certain age and a certain stature to wear that hat.”
Nearby, a group of UConn students cheered on these well-known representatives from their basketball team. “It’s really cool,” said UConn student Coleen Lucey. “We work for athletics, so we are big fans, and we get to see them up close. But it’s cool to see them in a different environment.”
For his part, Murray shared some funny comments about the pictures used for media press credentials. “It’s from the 1900s,” Murray said, describing one picture. “That’s your grandmother, I guess,” he said about another.
Several people visited the course in hopes of celebrity sightings, including many UConn students and staff members. Fans are clearly looking forward to the Travelers tournament. It’s the biggest national sporting event in Connecticut, and people are proud of that.
Channel 3 was represented by Joe Zone, Marc Robbins, and Marcy Jones. The team ended up being named co-champions alongside the iHeartRadio team.
The money won by WFSB will go to the Denise D’Ascenzo Foundation.
The Travelers Championship runs until June 25.
