It's 2023 and
celebrity red carpets have never been more extra, with gorgeous backgrounds (shoutout to the Met Gala's floral wall), designated spots for celebrities to pose in front of cameras, and the expectation that you go all out with glam. But back in the days of yore (we're talking like...the late '90s and early aughts), red carpets were doing the absolute least. Like, think a narrow strip of literal red carpet slapped onto some cement with zero backdrop, other than random people lurking in the background. And apparently, the whole getting-super-dressed-up thing didn't kick off until recently either, because celebs showed up to premieres in everything from oversized sweaters to jeans—which, frankly, let's go back to that vibe, pls.Naturally, and inevitably, this means a ton of celebrities had debut red carpet moments that were equal parts hilarious and wholesome. Check out the first major red carpet moments from 50 famous celebs, and note: Some of these A-listers *had* shown up at events before the ones pictured, they just weren't quite as major.
Personal faves include Julia Roberts wearing bike shorts to the Steel Magnolias premiere, Rachel McAdams looking like a fully different person at the Mean Girls premiere, and Salma Hayek's red dress from the Desperado premiere—which has immediately gone to the top of our list of best red carpet dresses of all time.
