From the very beginning of its existence, Hollywood has never been kind to aging stars. But a new generation of celebs has begun noting the physical and emotional consequences of the industry’s relentless push for youthfulness. Specifically, more and more celebrities are speaking out against plastic surgery, Botox, fillers, and general cosmetic procedures. Celebs like Jamie Lee Curtis, Jennifer Garner, Halle Berry, and more are vocal about the fact that they’re choosing to embrace aging instead of searching for the next magical procedure that will remove fine lines, plump sagging cheeks, or smooth foreheads.
Many celebrities who speak out against procedures say they’re not judgmental about others within the industry who have chosen to have surgery or fillers to deal with the effects of aging. They just don’t want it for themselves. Some have tried procedures such as Botox and hated the results (Jennifer Gray said it made her feel “invisible.”). Many celebs have said they’ve earned their smile lines and don’t want to look frozen. From posing without makeup for photo shoots to accepting the inevitable changes in their bodies, people are opening up about society’s anti-aging culture.
Some stars are even more candid and say it’s just not normal to want to look young forever since aging is a natural process. It’s a positive message from those within an industry that has long encouraged impossible standards that none of us—not even the celebs themselves—could manage to achieve throughout a lifetime.
Ahead are just a few of the celebrities who have been outspoken against fillers and plastic surgery.
1 Jennifer Garner
Jennifer Garner told Harper’s Bazaar that people should obsess less: “Don’t think that you’re 37 and you need to be shooting up your face. You don’t need to wear so much makeup or have such a constant blowout.”
2 Halle Berry
Halle Berry told Yahoo Beauty that there’s always someone suggesting she have procedures to stay alive in this business: “It’s almost like crack that people are trying to push on you. That’s what I feel like. I just have kept reminding myself that beauty really is as beauty does, and it is not so much about my physical self. Aging is natural, and that’s going to happen to all of us.”
3 Jamie Lee Curtis
In a new interview with Fast Company, Curtis, 62, spoke out against plastic surgery and trendy cosmetic procedures: “The current trend of fillers and procedures, and this obsession with filtering, and the things that we do to adjust our appearance on Zoom are wiping out generations of beauty,” the Knives Out actress said. “Once you mess with your face, you can’t get it back.”
4 Salma Hayek
“I don’t believe in Botox because your face doesn’t move, and it’s something you have to do for the rest of your life, more and more every time,” Selma Hayek told DuJour.
5 Jennifer Aniston
Jennifer Aniston told People there’s tremendous pressure in Hollywood to be ageless: “I think what I have been witness to, is seeing women trying to stay ageless with what they are doing to themselves. I am grateful to learn from their mistakes because I am not injecting s**t into my face.”
6 Emma Thompson
Emma Thompson told Hello Magazine that plastic surgery is mad: “It’s not a normal thing to do, and the culture that we’ve created that says it’s normal, is not normal.”
7 Julia Roberts
“It’s unfortunate that we live in such a panicked, dysmorphic society where women don’t even give themselves a chance to see what they’ll look like as older persons,” Julia Roberts told Elle.
8 Jodie Foster
Jodie Foster told People that plastic surgery isn’t her thing. “For me, it’s really a self-image thing. Like, I’d rather have somebody go, ‘Wow, that girl has a bad nose’ than ‘Wow, that girl has a bad nose job.’”
9 Julianne Moore
Julianne Moore told Allure she doesn't think Botox makes people look better: “I think it just makes them look like they had something done to their face. When you look at somebody who’s had their face altered in some way, it just looks weird.”
10 Shannon Doherty
Shannon Doherty posted on Instagram: “Watching movies tonight and noticed there were few female characters I could relate to. You know, women without fillers, without Botox, without a facelift. Women who embraced their face and all the experience it showed.”
11 Diane Keaton
In an essay for The Daily Beast, Diane Keaton explained how she feels about getting older: “I don’t see anything wrong with face-lifts or Botox or fillers. They just erase the hidden battle scars. I intend to wear mine, sort of. At least that’s what I say to myself.”
12 Cameron Diaz
Cameron Diaz told ET, “I’ve tried [Botox] before, where it was like [a] little tiny touch of something. It changed my face in such a weird way that I was like, ‘No, I don’t want to [be] like [that]’ … I’d rather see my face aging than a face that doesn’t belong to me at all.”
13 Courtney Cox
Courtney Cox told New Beauty she regrets doctor-hopping to have procedures when she was younger: “That’s kind of sad because it got me in trouble. I was trying so hard to keep up, and I actually made things worse.”
14 Stevie Nicks
Stevie Nicks told The Guardian: “Oh God, the Botox,” she says. “Let me tell you, Botox only makes you look like you’re in a satanic cult. I only had it once and it destroyed my face for four months.”
15 Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie told The Mail: “I haven’t had anything done and I don’t think I will. But if it makes somebody happy then that’s up to them. I’m not in somebody else’s skin to know what makes them feel better about themselves. But I don’t plan to do it myself.”
P!nk posted a letter to herself on Twitter: “Letter to self; Dear Me, you’re getting older. I see lines. Especially when you smile. Your nose is getting bigger. You look (and feel) weird as you get used to this new reality. But your nose looks like your kids and your face wrinkles where you laugh.”
17 Amanda Peet
“I’ve never gotten Botox or fillers,” said Amanda Peet on SiriusXM’s Conversations with Maria Menounos. “I’ve never done anything to my face that’s ‘invasive.’”
18 Kristen Stewart
When Harper’s Bazaar asked if she’d ever have plastic surgery, Kristen Stewart said: “No, never. Never. I am so freaked out by the idea of doing anything. And maybe that’s completely arrogant but I don’t want to change anything about myself.”
