We all need to sustain a living, that’s what jobs are for. Sometimes it looks something like getting up early in the morning and being in the office from nine until the end of a busy day. Through that time, we have colleagues to deal with, bosses to answer to, and, at the end of the day, good old traffic to get stuck in on our way home. Other times, it looks something like working at our own time, creating music and other works of art on our own terms, and, for celebrities, interviews in between. Regardless of how we make a living, some parts of our jobs can be exhausting.
There’s a lot that comes with being a star. Celebrities have twice the options, and, if unlucky, twice the stress in their day-to-day lives. In the past, some of them have expressed their frustration with things that come with the job that they’re not particularly fond of.
10 Kanye West: Slave Contracts
In September of 2020, Kanye West went on a Twitter rampage, tarnishing the name of the music industry and revealing how slave-like it was. Kanye unleashed contracts with his labels online, asking lawyers to scrutinize them. He called the music industry and the NBA ‘slave ships’, and promised not to release any music until he was freed. “I need to see everybody’s contracts at Universal and Sony. I’,m not gonna watch my people be enslaved.” Kanye tweeted.
9 George Clooney: Popularity
While most of the world idolizes fortune and fame, the same cannot be said for George Clooney. He joins the long list of celebrities who just don’t care for attention. In 2014, Clooney told Esquire: “ I haven’t walked in Central Park for 15 years.” Even getting away to Italy to have some peace of mind didn’t work for Clooney. “ …every time you go out, it’s a scene. Other boats follow you, photographers follow you.” Clooney said.
8 Will Smith: Getting Sued
In 2018, Will Smith initiated a session on his vlogs dubbed “Ask Uncle Will.” His friend Scotty’s daughter was ‘the first person to Ask Uncle Will.” Her Question: Would you rather have the life you have now or live a normal life? Will Smith said, "The life that I have now is one I’ve always dreamed of…I love being famous…but then there’s definitely the other side. I get sued probably 15 times a year. I have lawyers on a monthly retainer just because you get sued so much when you are famous.”
7 Beyonce: Fast Selling Singles
In her HBO documentary Life Is But A Dream, Beyonce pointed out that most artists didn’t honor artistry, and were only focused on releasing singles until they burned out. Likewise, she said fans are more focused on things other than albums. “People don’t even listen to a body of work anymore…I think when Nina Simone put out music you loved her voice, that’s what she wanted you to love. You didn’t get brainwashed by her day-to-day life.”
6 Naomi Osaka: Post-Match Press
The recent months have seen Naomi Osaka go through more lows than highs. The 23-year old tennis star was fined a sum of $15,000 for skipping press at the French Open. She eventually withdrew altogether, opting to prepare for the Olympics. In a statement posted on her Instagram account, Osaka said in part: “ Though the tennis press has always been kind to me(and I wanna apologize especially to the cool journalists who I may have hurt), I am not a natural public speaker and I get huge waves of anxiety before I speak to the world’s media”
5 Selena Gomez: Social Media
Social media is without a doubt a big part of celebrities’ lives. It’s direct contact with the fans and can be a good source of additional income. While she still keeps her accounts active, Selena Gomez has long retired from the thrill that comes with social media. In 2019, Selena said, “ For my generation specifically, social media has been terrible…for me, I’m intentional with it…allow yourself some time limits of when you use it.”
4 Tina Fey: The Met Gala
Who hates the Met Gala? Tina Fey does. The comedian has in the past termed the event as a ‘jerk parade’. Speaking to David Letterman, Fey said she attended the event once and wasn’t looking forward to attending it a second time. “ It’s this beautiful space and it’s just every jerk from every walk of life is there wearing, like, some stupid thing.” Well, Fey is not about that ‘mean girl’ life, as that’s part of the Met Gala’s reputation.
3 Lady Gaga: Her Piano
Many celebrities have a love-hate relationship with stardom. Lady Gaga in particular blames her piano for making her a star. The star has been a strong advocate for mental health. Speaking to Sunday Morning, Gaga said of her piano: “This is the piano I’ve had for so many years. I’ve written so many songs on this piano…I went from looking at this Piano and thinking ‘You ruined my life.’” Gaga’s relationship with her piano, however, is full of love. Those bouts of hate just came in when she wasn’t feeling like her best self, and hated fame.
2 Alicia Keys: Makeup
A large part of being a celebrity involves covering the face up with layers and layers of makeup. Alicia Keys got addicted to that norm, until one day she woke up and decided to go the other way. ‘The universe was listening to those things I’d promised myself, or maybe I was just finally listening to the universe, but however it goes, that’s how the whole #nomakeup thing began.” Keys chooses to stay off makeup, even when hosting the Grammys.
1 Anna Kendrick: Parties
What is celeb life without parties? A very dull life and Anna Kendrick just happens to love the quiet that comes with being in her own space, away from the noise. She has no need to be at the party, or the party after the party, you know how these things go. “ I like sweatpants and staying home.” Kendrick once said. A ‘boring’ day at home is better than any party invite in the eyes of Kendrick.
