WINDSOR MILL, Maryland — From education to inequality, millions of people worldwide face struggles, especially those in developing countries. However, these global issues disproportionately affect women. Several female celebrities have utilized their platforms to raise awareness and address the issues that hinder the growth and development of women globally.
Emma Watson
This “Harry Potter” star is an advocate for global gender equality. Watson’s female-focused humanitarian efforts resulted in her appointment as a U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador in 2014. Watson participated in education campaigns for girls in Bangladesh, Zambia and other rural parts of Africa. Watson is also involved in the HeForShe campaign. HeForShe is a U.N. movement that aims to mobilize men to fight for gender equality around the world. She also donated £1 million to the U.K. Justice and Equality Fund, an organization that fights sexual harassment around the U.K.
Meghan Markle
In September 2020, Markle and her husband Prince Harry donated $130,000 to CAMFED International, a nonprofit organization with the mission to educate and empower girls and young women in parts of Africa, specifically Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi and Ghana. Markle has also been involved in the United Nations Development Programme, specifically working to improve women’s empowerment. She is also a supporter of The Circle, an organization of women fighting to achieve gender equality.
Gigi Hadid
This model’s charity work with UNICEF involves supporting mothers and children. In 2018, Hadid showed her support by visiting Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. While there, she met with mothers and other women UNICEF supports in order to strengthen households and communities. A year later, she visited Senegal with UNICEF and went to a women’s shelter, a child and maternal health center and a digital skills youth center for teenage girls. She also started a CrowdRise page with UNICEF Ambassador and model, Halima Aden, to support and raise awareness of UNICEF’s work with children and mothers.
Victoria Beckham
One of the female celebrities empowering women globally is Victoria Beckham. This celebrity singer’s work against HIV and AIDS has helped mothers and children. In 2014, she sold around 600 pieces of her own clothes to support the mothers2mothers charity, an organization dedicated to preventing mother-to-child HIV/AIDS transmission. The charity organization also provides education and support for pregnant and new mothers living with HIV. In 2016, Beckham visited Kenya as the UNAIDS International Goodwill Ambassador. Her visit focused on prevention and treatment for young women, keeping mothers healthy to protect their newborn children and HIV testing. She continues to support organizations that fight HIV/AIDS across the globe.
Abigail Disney
The great-niece of Walt Disney is a filmmaker who documents women in nations suffering from the effects of war. Her work also focuses on how conflict, war and peacebuilding play out in women’s lives. Within the United States, her charity work involves funding and support for women in prison, women with HIV, women suffering from domestic violence and women who dedicate their time to the community. She also spends her time peacebuilding with women around the world and amplifying the voices of women outside of the United States. Her documentary, “Pray the Devil Back to Hell,” focused on the efforts of Liberian women uplifting their country after a long civil war. According to PND, she is currently working on a series “about the changing role of women in conflicts around the globe.”
Kristen Bell
In 2018, this actress and celebrity became the first global advocate for the Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF). WPHF is an organization that focuses on ensuring that women are more involved in peacebuilding. U.N. studies show that the more women involved in conflict resolution, the higher rates of peacebuilding, strong communities and gender equality. However, the involvement of women in peacebuilding is low and underfunded. With WPHF, Bell serves as an advocate and voice for these women. She works to raise awareness and bring gender equality around the world. Other women-focused organizations that Bell supports include WomenHeart and the Somaly Mam Foundation.
Annalynne McCord
Annalynne McCord is a model, actress and activist. Being an issue that hits close to home, McCord has been speaking out against sexual abuse, assault and human trafficking. She has donated to several charities focused on educating people and helping victims. McCord has worked with Somaly Mam’s Together1Heart organization, which assists women and girls who have been victims of human sex trafficking in Cambodia. She is also a supporter of The Blind Project, another organization dedicated to fighting human trafficking.
These female celebrities show how celebrity platforms can be used to address global issues affecting women around the world, improving the greater good of the globe.
