NEW BUSINESS: Lobbying firms are filing a flurry of registrations and terminations ahead of Tuesday’s quarterly filing deadline. Here are a few filings that stand out: An alliance of Hollywood production companies, distributors and other companies has hired Arshi Siddiqui, Geoff Verhoff and Brendan Dunn of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld to lobby on coronavirus relief measures “related and specific to the content production industry,” according to a disclosure filing. The American Coalition of Independent Content Producers’ members include Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners, A24 Films, Alcon Entertainment and Village Roadshow Pictures, among others.

Etsy, Eventbrite and Pinterest, meanwhile, have hired Kountoupes Denham Carr & Reid to lobby on content moderation issues, according to disclosure filings. None of the companies have major Washington lobbying presences. Eventbrite also retains Invariant, while Etsy has Public Private Strategies and Pinterest retains Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck. And Planet Fitness has hired Cicely Simpson of Summit Public Affairs to lobby on pandemic relief. The gym chain also recently brought on former Rep. Kevin Yoder (R-Kan.) and three other lobbyists at HHQ Ventures.

HOW THE CAMPAIGN TO HELP THE MEN WHO HELPED GHOSN ESCAPE IS GOING: “The two American men accused of orchestrating the former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn’s escape from Tokyo are making a last-ditch appeal to the Trump administration to avoid being sent to face trial in Japan,” Bloomberg NewsDavid Yaffe-Bellany reports. “After a federal magistrate in Boston authorized Japan’s extradition request in September, representatives for former Green Beret Michael Taylor and his son Peter wrote to officials in the White House and State Department urging them to reject Japan’s request.

“It’s a long-shot strategy, but Michael Taylor is presenting himself to the U.S. government as a heroic patriot: He’s playing up his cloak-and-dagger past rescuing children abducted to the Middle East. The final decision on whether to ship the Taylors to Japan rests with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. For months, the Taylors have deployed an expensive team of lawyers and lobbyists to press their case with officials at the Justice Department and the State Department.”

“That lobbying intensified after the Sept. 4 ruling in Boston. About a week later, the Taylors’ team sent a roughly 25-page letter to an official at the State Department who oversees extraditions, laying out arguments that the father-son duo made in court, along with testimonials from the mothers whose children Michael Taylor helped rescue during his career as a security consultant, according to a person familiar with the matter. The Taylors also sent an approximately two-page long, bullet-point summary to the White House, the person said, following conversations about the case with high-level officials in the Trump administration.”

CANNABIS LOBBY COULD LOSE AN ALLY ON THE HILL: With former Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper leading by substantial margins in polls of Colorado’s Senate race, the cannabis industry may lose one of its top allies on the Hill: Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.). Hickenlooper isn’t viewed as favorably as Gardner among Colorado legalization efforts “in part because he vetoed three cannabis bills toward the end of his final term as governor,” POLITICO’s Natalie Fertig reports.

“‘John Hickenlooper usually has to get dragged into having the conversation. He's still uncomfortable with it,’ said Kevin Sabet of anti-legalization group Smart Approaches to Marijuana. Sabet added that while he believes Hickenlooper would likely vote similarly to Gardner on marijuana, he believes his job in Washington will be easier without Gardner around. "Would [Hickenlooper] be a champion and focus on marijuana so much? I'm not sure.’”

HOW REPUBLICAN OPERATIVES HELP SHAPE LOCAL NEWS: The New York TimesDavey Alba and Jack Nicas dug into the “fast-growing network of nearly 1,300 websites that aim to fill a void left by vanishing local newspapers across the country. Yet the network, now in all 50 states, is built not on traditional journalism but on propaganda ordered up by dozens of conservative think tanks, political operatives, corporate executives and public-relations professionals, a Times investigation found.”

— “The sites appear as ordinary local-news outlets, with names like Des Moines Sun, Ann Arbor Times and Empire State Today. They employ simple layouts and articles about local politics, community happenings and sometimes national issues, much like any local newspaper. But behind the scenes, many of the stories are directed by political groups and corporate P.R. firms to promote a Republican candidate or a company, or to smear their rivals.”

IF YOU MISSED IT ON FRIDAY: The campaign of Rep. Joe Kennedy (D-Mass.) “said Friday that it improperly spent $1.5 million of donations intended for the general election during the final weeks of his bitter and ultimately unsuccessful primary challenge to Senator Edward J. Markey,” The Boston Globe’s Victoria McGrane reports. “The spending was a clear violation of federal campaign finance rules, which prohibit candidates from using general election money on expenses for the primary.”

— “In a statement to the Globe, Kennedy said he did not know the campaign had been improperly spending general election funds during the primary, and that the violation came to his attention shortly after the Sept. 1 election. Kennedy said he reimbursed his campaign with $1.5 million of his own money in late September to cover all of the improperly spent funds.”
