City Of West Hollywood Invites Community Members To Participate As Name Readers In Advance Of Virtual Transgender Day Of Remembrance Event In November

The City of West Hollywood and its Transgender Advisory Board recognize Transgender Awareness Month each November.

As part of Transgender Awareness Month, the City hosts a Transgender Day of Remembrance ceremony. This year, Transgender Day of Remembrance will be hosted via the Zoom platform, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In anticipation of the City's virtual Transgender Day of Remembrance ceremony, which will take place on Friday, November 20, 2020, the City is inviting community members to take part in a Reading of Names to memorialize people who have been murdered as a result of anti-transgender violence.

Community members who are interested in volunteering in the traditional Reading of Names will be asked to recite the name of at least one person and share brief biographical details of that person memorialized, along with the circumstances surrounding their murder.

Community members who are interested in participating as name readers will be provided additional production-related details upon being selected to be part of the names reading portion of the event. As there are a limited number of names, capacity for participation is limited and not all volunteer requests will be able to be fulfilled. Community members interested in taking part of this event should contact Hernán Molina, the City of West Hollywood's Governmental Affairs Liaison, at hmolina@weho.org or at (323) 848-6364 and provide full name, phone number and an email address.

Details about Transgender Awareness Month activities and about the Transgender Day of Remembrance event will be available on the City's calendar at www.weho.org/calendar, when available.

The City of West Hollywood has declared a local emergency in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. When in public, community members should maintain your space with social (physical) distancing of at least six feet, and cover your face. Public Health officials recommend that everyone continue to follow physical distancing and infection control directives and wear a clean cloth face covering that securely covers both your nose and mouth when in contact with other people not in your household. City of West Hollywood coronavirus updates are available at www.weho.org/coronavirus.

For reporters and members of the media seeking additional information about the City of West Hollywood, please contact the City of West Hollywood's Public Information Officer, Sheri A. Lunn, at (323) 848-6391 or slunn@weho.org.
