Why Ravens' Marquise Brown is nicknamed 'Hollywood' & on the verge of a breakout 2020 - Sporting News

Marquise "Hollywood" Brown enters the most anticipated game of the 2020 NFL season as Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson's top wide receiver target.

Brown entered the league last year with some concerns about his health and ability to burn cornerbacks in the same way he did in college at Oklahoma. So far, though, he's been the player Baltimore hoped he would be and offered promise he can get even better.

Brown has 143 receiving yards through the first two games of this season after accumulating 584 and seven touchdowns in his rookie campaign.

Brown also has an interesting (and fitting) nickname and cousin who was recently an All-Pro receiver.

Here's what to know about the second-year wideout:

Why is Marquise Brown nicknamed 'Hollywood'?

Brown arrived at Oklahoma with the nickname "Jet" but has since been referred to more often as "Hollywood." The moniker comes from Fox college football broadcaster Gus Johnson, who started calling Brown "Hollywood" because of his hometown of Hollywood, Fla., and his explosiveness with the Sooners.

"Hollywood" resonated with Oklahoma fans and the rest of the college football world, and the nickname stuck. Brown met Johnson in 2017 and gave his approval.

Is Marquise Brown related to Antonio Brown?

Marquise Brown is the younger cousin of former All-Pro Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown, whose career has been derailed by legal problems.

How good can 'Hollywood' Brown become?

Brown is in an ideal situation for a young receiver, getting paired up with an MVP-level quarterback in Lamar Jackson looking to find a go-to outside option for years to come. Jackson's arm strength pairs well with Brown's downfield speed, and there are similarities between the way Brown can play with Jackson and the way he played at Oklahoma with Kyler Murray. Brown doesn't have much positional competition in 2020, which should allow him to receive plenty of targets.

He didn't have a monster rookie year, but he did deliver flashes of greatness that included 147 yards in his NFL debut. Most of his production came in his first seven games (454 of 584 yards); he attributed his late-season struggles to pain in his lower body.

Brown seems on track to become an annual 1,000-yard receiving threat if he stays healthy.

What was Marquise Brown's 40-yard dash time?

Brown didn't participate in the NFL Draft Combine because of a foot injury, so he never got to flash his elite speed in an official timed capacity. He believes he could have run a sub-4.30.

When did the Ravens draft Marquise Brown?

Baltimore selected Brown with the No. 25 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Brown played a season at College of the Canyons, a junior college, before transferring to Oklahoma; he didn't have any scholarship offers coming out of high school. His two seasons as a Sooners receiver were spectacular. He racked up 2,413 yards and 17 touchdowns in Norman catching passes from Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray.

Marquise Brown college injury

Brown suffered a serious injury to the Lisfranc region of his foot that prematurely ended his final season at Oklahoma and required surgery. Foot injuries are particularly concerning for speed receivers, and the setback likely dented his draft stock. He also picked up hip and ankle injuries that nagged him as an NFL rookie.

He received a second foot surgery this past offseason.
