Harriet Sanson Harris portrays former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, who pushes Avis Amberg [Patti LuPone] to cast a black woman, Camille Washington (Laura Harrier) as the lead in her film. While that plot point is fictional, the real Roosevelt did speak out about the power of Hollywood to shape America.
"The film industry is a great industry, with infinite possibilities for good and bad," Roosevelt wrote in 1947. "Its primary purpose is to entertain people. On the side, it can do many other things. It can popularize certain ideals, it can make education palatable."
Roosevelt died in 1962 of tuberculosis. She was 78.
