Protests were held across the U.S. this weekend demanding justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery, and the countless other black Americans who have been victims of senseless killings due to racism and police brutality. Some celebrities joined in on these protests in major cities such as Los Angeles or New York, while other stars used their platforms to highlight a variety of related causes. Stars used their social media presence to draw attention to organizations such as the Brooklyn Bail Fund, which helps keep New York-based protestors out of jail, or GoFundMes that directly benefit the family members of victims, such as the Floyd family's page.
On Instagram, Beyoncé uploaded a video of herself denouncing Floyd’s murder. "We need justice for George Floyd. We all witnessed his murder in broad daylight. We're broken and we're disgusted. We cannot normalize this pain," the star said. “I’m not only speaking to people of color; if you’re white, black, brown or anything in-between, I’m sure you feel hopeless by the racism going on in America right now. No more senseless killing of human beings, no more seeing people of color as less than human. We can no longer look away. George is all of our family in humanity. He’s our family because he’s a fellow American.” Rihanna also mourned Floyd with an Instagram post, writing: “Watching my people get murdered and lynched day after day pushed me to a heavy place in my heart. To the point of staying away from socials, just to avoid hearing the blood curdling agony in George Floyd’s voice again, begging over and over for his life.”
Singer Billie Eilish also posted a short essay about white privilege on Instagram. “If all lives matter why are black people killed for just being black?" she wrote. "Why are immigrants persecuted? Why are white people given opportunities that people of other races aren’t? We have to address hundreds of years of oppression of black people.” Taylor Swift directly responded to President Donald Trump's recent Twitter statement that disapproved of protestors and even threatened them with violence. "After stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency, you have the nerve to feign moral superiority before threatening violence?" she wrote on Twitter. "‘When the looting starts the shooting starts’??? We will vote you out in November."
Celebrities such as Ariana Grande, Cardi B, Lady Gaga, and more also shared posts that provided direct phone numbers to Minneapolis officials. They asked their followers to reach out and demand justice for Floyd's murder.
