A Mid-Century Modern trophy home in Los Angeles built for a Hollywood starlet in the 1950s and painstakingly restored over the past four years is fresh on the market with a $27 million price tag.
Designed by the prominent London-born architect Rex Lotery, who’s on the list of Master Architects of Beverly Hills, the Trousdale Estates home was built for French actress Corinne Calvet. She reportedly sued actress Zsa Zsa Gabor in 1952 for $1 million, accusing her of slander after Gabor was quoted saying that Calvet wasn’t French but a cockney English girl.

“I think in Los Angeles, the entertainment capital of the world, it’s always nice to have a storied history on a property,” said listing agent Mick Partridge of the Partridge Estates Group at Hilton & Hyland. “I definitely think Rex’s name is at the forefront of that. And Corinne Calvet [having] lived there obviously adds a sense of Hollywood pedigree.”
When the home was snapped up in 2017, it was full of rough stone and shag carpet, past listing images show.
The “sweat equity” involved in the four-year project was significant, Mr. Partridge said.
The owner “extended the wing on the right, now the primary suite, and excavated and went subterranean,” and in doing so almost doubled the home’s original footprint to 8,800 square feet, Mr. Partridge said.
That subterranean level boasts a 1,500 bottle temperature-controlled wine cellar and a screening room.
Elsewhere in the low-slung home there are walls of glass, wood accents, eight bathrooms and six bedrooms, of which the primary suite is particularly notable, according to Mr. Partridge. There’s also a zero-edge pool, a three-car carport sans garage door to stay true to the era, and hand-poured terrazzo flooring—a hallmark of mid-century design.
There’s also a library, which was originally the home’s main bedroom. “With the built-ins, the wood-burning fireplace and the landscaping with the floor-to ceiling-glass windows, [it’s] pretty impressive,” Mr. Partridge said.
The verdant landscaping was part of the property’s facelift. “That whole hillside in the back, it was hideous when he bought it and he planted all that,” Mr. Partridge said. “He really wanted the new owner to have this sense of escape. He wanted it to feel lush and green.”
The owner is listed in records as a limited liability company, who snapped up the spread in 2017 for $5.7 million, according to PropertyShark.
“I think traditional mid-century homes are tough to live in, simply because they look beautiful but they’re not necessarily comfortable for modern living,” Mr. Partridge said.
This home, he added, offers the best of both worlds, with the provenance to appeal to a mid-century enthusiast as well as the amenities needed for a contemporary lifestyle.
