Celebrities often cameo in films and TV, such as Stan Lee's multiple MCU cameos and the many celebrities, like Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, that made brief cameos in Free Guy. However, many of these roles turn the celebrity's personality up to 11 and make for some genuinely memorable performances.
Cameos that allow the show or film to poke light-hearted fun at the celebrity are the best kind, as they show their capacity to laugh at themselves and not take the scene too seriously. They also allow the creators of the film or TV show to make a memorable character, rather than just having the celebrity make the cameo for appearances' sake.
10 Ryan Reynolds - Deadpool 2
In the most successful X-Men movie to date, the anti-hero Deadpool goes back in time to fix some of the mistakes that film studios have made in the past, namely by killing the terrible X-Men Origins version of the Wade Wilson character and shooting Ryan Reynolds to prevent him signing on to the Green Lantern movie.
Ryan Reynolds is not a stranger to playing himself in films and TV shows, appearing in Family Guy and A Million Ways to Die in the West (even if very briefly). Appearing as himself in Deadpool 2 is a fun nod to the audience, acknowledging that both X-Men Origins and Green Lantern probably shouldn't have ever existed.
9 David Hasselhoff - The Spongebob Squarepants Movie
The beloved cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants is known for its off-the-wall humor, with many scenes becoming relatable memes in recent years. Having random things happen is a staple of Spongebob media, including the 2016 musical, which had a number of celebrity singers and artists creating songs for the soundtrack.
David Hasselhoff appears randomly in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, arriving out of nowhere to save Spongebob and Patrick and take them back to Bikini Bottom. In a hilariously odd moment, Hasselhoff places the characters on his chest and turns his pecs into launchers to send them home. Hasselhoff has a number of cameos in media, including Ted 2 and Young Sheldon, but this was by far the oddest.
8 David Bowie - Zoolander
One of Ben Stiller's best goofball comedies, Zoolander follows male model Derek as his stupidity leads him into absurd and often dangerous situations. One such situation is a walk-off against his popular rival, Hansel, and features them doing catwalk poses to impress an audience. David Bowie appears as the judge for the walk-off, and despite the absurd situation, he takes the models through the rules calmly, appearing to be a seasoned walk-off pro.
Zoolander and its sequel contain many celebrity cameos, such as Justin Bieber, who portrays a fugitive that live-streams his escape attempts. Bowie's inclusion is off-the-wall and hilarious, even more so because Derek's little shrug when Bowie introduces himself implies that this kind of thing happens all the time.
7 Channing Tatum - This Is The End
This Is The End is an apocalypse comedy starring Seth Rogen, James Franco, and a ton of other celebrities that play odd versions of themselves. The film is much like other dark comedy movies, but the interactions between the actors stuck in James Franco's mansion set this movie apart from its peers.
Of the many celebrity cameos on the movie -- among which are Rhianna, Emma Watson, and Michael Cera -- the one that stands out as the oddest is Channing Tatum, who plays a gimp in Danny McBride's cannibal tribe. The surprise of the masked man actually being Channing Tatum and not an actor pretending to be him is genuinely brilliant, as is Tatum's commitment to the role.
6 LeVar Burton - Community
While Community focused on a group of misfits at a community college, many celebrities made guest appearances on the show, such as Owen Wilson, Jack Black and John Goodman. However, LeVar Burton's appearance in a documentary astonishes the characters and allows for some hilarious gags.
Troy's interactions with Burton are hysterical alone, but his screaming at the documentary crew is an incredible scene and includes one of Troy's best one-liners. Burton later appeared in season 5 to take Troy on a boat trip, but this initial episode shows Burton to be a kind person -- although he did have some fun torturing Troy while eating dinner together.
5 Cher - Will & Grace
Jack from Will & Grace is a passionate and flamboyant character who, in one episode, carries around a toy Cher doll and treats the doll as if it is real, to the annoyance of his friends. At the end of the episode, the real Cher appears and calls Jack out on the behavior, telling him to get a life, but Jack doesn't recognize her, instead insulting her and saying, "I do a better Cher than you."
Cher being willing to participate in a sing-off with Jack -- utterly demolishing him in the process -- and Jack subsequently fainting, is absolutely iconic, and shows the celebrity is able to take a joke in stride. Cher has also cameoed in films such as Mamma Mia 2 and the badly reviewed Bobbleheads: The Movie, where she played a literal bobblehead of herself.
4 Keanu Reeves - Always Be My Maybe
Keanu Reeves appears in Always Be My Maybe, which follows two childhood sweethearts reconnecting after many years. His performance is off-the-wall and hilarious, putting his all into every line, at one point smashing a vase over his head, and getting into a brawl with Marcus.
As soon as he appears on-screen, Keanu immediately steals the movie, spouting such brilliant lines as, "Men should be able to face their death head-on," and, "The only stars that matter are the ones you look at when you dream." Absolutely iconic.
3 Bill Murray - Zombieland
Bill Murray survives the zombie apocalypse in Zombieland using his acting knowledge, pretending to be a zombie by creating makeup out of berries. Murray appears amicable, even participating in a prank to scare Columbus, which results in him getting mistaken for a zombie and shot on sight.
Woody Harrelson geeking out over Bill Murray is over the top, and Murray's entire scene is basically an indulgence for him to showcase his movies, most prominently Ghostbusters, by acting out a scene with Harrelson and mentioning Garfield as his last word after getting shot.
2 Stephen Hawking - The Simpsons
The Simpsons is known for its biting American satire and its inclusion of celebrity guest stars in many of its episodes, such as Tony Hawk, Lady Gaga, and Ricky Gervais. One of the greatest scientists in the field of physics, Stephen Hawking, guest-starred on The Simpsons multiple times, the most prominent appearance being in the episode "They Saved Lisa's Brain," where Springfield is taken over by a group of geniuses.
Hawking is unimpressed by the new town and punches Seymour Skinner in the face with a boxing glove on a spring from his wheelchair. He also has a propellor and rocket boosters attached to his wheelchair to enable him to fly.
1 Neil Patrick Harris - Harold & Kumar Movies
In the Harold & Kumar movie franchise, Neil Patrick Harris plays himself as a gay actor but then pretending to be a straight actor pretending to be gay in an effort to get women and do copious amounts of drugs. His eccentric performance works great for the stoner vibe of the movies, adding even more weirdness into the mix.
Harris has played himself in many other movies, such as The Muppets, and has portrayed plenty of characters in his career that are downright odd, such as Count Olaf in the TV adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events. Harris always throws himself into his roles, regardless of what they are, to create a memorable performance.
