Remember that really odd Twitter debate back in 2019 when people disputed whether washing their legs was necessary when they took a shower? Well, the conversation has gotten weirder since celebs started discussing how little they bother washing, well, anything.
It all began with Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, who revealed during a podcast appearance that they only bathe their four- and six-year-old children when they “see the dirt on them.” Their comments triggered a ripple effect of other stars sharing their bathing habits—or lack thereof.
But like Cardi B, who chimed in by tweeting, “it’s giving itchy,” the recent discourse has also left us raising our eyebrows.

Here’s a roundup of celebs who’ve so bravely come out as grimy.
Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher
During a recent appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast with Dax Shepard and Monica Padman, married actors Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis were compelled to explain that they don’t bathe daily. The subject came up when the hosts started discussing how frequently they shower.
“Now, here’s the thing: If you can see the dirt on them, clean them,” Kutcher said of his two children. “Otherwise, there’s no point.” He added that he personally washes his armpits and crotch areas regularly, but “nothing else ever.”
Kunis, who says that she didn’t have hot water growing up so she rarely took showers, added, “When I had children, I also didn’t wash them every day. I wasn’t that parent that bathed my newborns—ever.”
On Wednesday, Kutcher poked fun at the cleanliness debate, posting a video to Instagram of Kunis standing in the bathroom as their children were bathing. (The video is child friendly.)
The caption read, “This bathing thing is getting out of hand.”
Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell
During that same podcast, Shepard said he and his wife used to bathe their daughters regularly, but that they stopped when the kids got older. The couple later doubled down on The View, sharing that they often forget to bathe their kids at all.
“I’m a big fan of waiting for the stink,” Kristen Bell says. “Once you catch a whiff, that’s biology’s way of letting you know you need to clean it up.”
They later defended their comments in another interview, saying that the drought in California is part of the reason that they rarely shower.
“We don’t have a ton of water, so when I shower I’ll grab the girls and push them in there with me so we all use the same shower water,” Bell said. “And I don’t know, it just happens whenever it happens, I guess.”
Jake Gyllenhaal
Jake Gyllenhaal discussed several themes relating to water—fast boats, a campaign for Prada’s Luna Rossa Ocean (he’s the new face of the fragrance), and his bathing ritual—during a recent Vanity Fair interview.
When asked about his shower routine, the Spider-Man: Far From Home actor said, “More and more I find bathing to be less necessary.”
He added, “But I do also think that there’s a whole world of not bathing that is also really helpful for skin maintenance, and we naturally clean ourselves.”
Coco Austin
During a recent Daily Pop interview, Coco Austin, rapper Ice T’s wife, also shared that she doesn’t bathe daily.
“When I’m feeling icky, I’ll get in the shower,” she said. “Whether that’s everyday, that may be, but it could be every three days.
She added, “I kind of keep myself clean though,” saying that if her armpits smell, then she’ll wash that specific area but not her full body.
She does make sure to wash her hair every four days, though. (Her husband has yet to comment on the matter.)
Brad Pitt
Back in 2009, Brad Pitt’s Inglourious Basterds co-star Eli Roth shared Pitt’s unconventional bathing tips with People.
“He shared that when you’re sweating and don’t have time to take a shower, you just take a baby wipe and rub it under your armpits,” Roth says.
As for Pitt’s pitts, Roth says Pitt told him, “I got six kids. All you’ve got to do is just take them, a couple quick wipes under the pits.” Pitt further explains, “Man, I’m getting [peed] on all day. I don’t have time to take a shower.”
Charlize Theron
In a 2008 interview with David Letterman, the Mad Max: Fury Road actor shared that she’d be “fine” with going a week without a shower.
“I’m very spoiled and I don’t take for granted how lucky I am to stay in fancy hotels and fly first class,” she said. “So when I do have a little time off, I like to get down and dirty [by] camping or traveling to countries that don’t have the luxuries.”
She added that, “there’s a time and a place for everything—and sometimes there’s a time for not showering.”
