Politicians, celebrities and activists alike reacted to the third mass shooting to hit the US in just over two weeks — this time claiming four lives, including a child, in a Los Angeles suburb.
Actress Alyssa Milano directed her outrage at President Joe Biden as she called for stricter gun controls.
“@POTUS, you ran on a platform of gun violence prevention. You won,” the 48-year-old activist said in a tweet.
“I understand you want Congress to act, but until we reform the filibuster, nothing is going to pass in the Senate. Gun violence is a national health crisis,” Milano added.
Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, said: “We are the only high income country where ‘getting back to normal’ after a pandemic means shootings resume in places where people should be safe.”
She noted that the rampage in Orange County was the ninth mass shooting in 2021 and the sixth this month.
But despite COVID lockdowns, 2020 was one of the deadliest years on record with an estimated 19,300 people killed in gun homicides or non-suicide-related shootings — a 25% increase over 2019,” Watts said in another tweet.
“Over 100 people in America are shot and killed every day and over 230 are wounded,” she said.
“Mass shootings are the tip of the iceberg of this country’s gun violence crisis. Over 99% of gun deaths in the US are daily gun homicides and suicides. And more guns than ever before – likely 50 million – were purchased in the last year alone. Tell your Senators to act. Now,” Watts added.
Julian Castro, a former Democratic presidential candidate from Texas, also reacted to the shooting.
“This is the 14th mass shooting in the last week alone. We must end the filibuster, pass gun safety legislation, and end this violence,” wrote Castro, who served as secretary of Housing and Urban Development during Barack Obama’s presidency.
Bernice King, the youngest child of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., shared a quote from her father: “We need leaders not in love with money but in love with justice. Not in love with publicity, but with humanity.”
YouTuber and singer Rebecca Black, 23, wrote: “orange is home to so many people I love and cherish. I can’t imagine the pain the victims’ families are going through. take action.”
Democratic US Rep. Katie Porter of California wrote in a tweet: “I’m deeply saddened by reports of a mass shooting in Orange County, and I’m continuing to keep victims and their loved ones in my thoughts as we continue to learn more. My team and I will continue to monitor the situation closely.”
Gov. Gavin Newsom condemned the violence and expressed his support for the victims’ families.
“Horrifying and heartbreaking. Our hearts are with the families impacted by this terrible tragedy tonight,” he said on Twitter.
Four people, including a child, were shot and killed Wednesday evening at an office building in Orange County, police said. The alleged gunman was critically injured.
The rampage comes after two other high-profile mass shootings earlier this month.
On March 22, 10 people were killed in a shooting at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado, less than a week after a man shot and killed eight people, including six women of Asian descent, at spas in Atlanta.
