Kerry Washington, Shonda Rhimes and Hillary Clinton were among those who shared messages after the result was read in court Tuesday afternoon.
Following the verdict in the Derek Chauvin murder trial, Hollywood figures took to social media to share their reactions.
Former Minneapolis police officer Chauvin, who was charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter over the killing of George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man whom he pinned down on the ground with his knee for approximately nine and half minutes, was on Tuesday afternoon found guilty on all three charges.
The jury reached their verdict after deliberating over two days. Since Floyd's death last May, the trial has prompted worldwide protests over police brutality and racism.
While some in Hollywood, such as Josh Gad, Lupita Nyong'o and Padma Lakshmi, simply expressed their relief over the guilty verdicts, others — like Shonda Rimes, Kerry Washington, W. Kamau Bell, poet Amanda Gorman and Justin Timberlake called for the fight, and the work in achieving equality and justice for the Black community, to continue.
"A beginning... a small grain of hope for our future," wrote Mariah Carey. She also tweeted, "Hallelujah!!!!!!!!"
"A guilty #verdict. But this fight for justice is not over," wrote Kerry Washington. "We have a lot of work to do. There is more fight ahead of us. But RIGHT NOW please take CARE of yourself. And let’s take care of each other. Prayers and love to the family of #GeorgeFloyd."
"This verdict is just the first step in a long line of injustice against the Black community, often with no consequences," wrote Timberlake. "The work is not nearly done. While there are many more families waiting for justice, my heart is with George Floyd’s family right now. #PoliceReformNOW @NAACP."
"A reminder that victory would be George Floyd being alive," wrote Gorman. "Every day Black Americans worry if they will be next is another day without justice."
"Derek Chauvin: guilty on all 3 counts Now let’s do the entire system of policing in this country," wrote W. Kamau Bell.
"Chauvin’s conviction is a huge moment - a necessary step toward validation & healing for his loved ones & movement but it’s not justice," wrote Kendrick Sampson. "And he still needs to be sentenced. Reminder: Chauvin is far from the only guilty 1 - he’s not the only person who lynched George Floyd."
"This verdict does not bring back Mr Floyd," said Shonda Rhimes. "But justice is truth."
"Today, a jury did the right thing," Barack Obama tweeted. "But true justice requires much more. Michelle and I send our prayers to the Floyd family, and we stand with all those who are committed to guaranteeing every American the full measure of justice that George and so many others have been denied."
"George Floyd's family and community deserved for his killer to be held accountable," tweeted Hillary Clinton. "Today, they got that accountability. Always and forever, Black lives matter."
On NBC's Nightly News With Lester Holt, the host commented, "And now the verdict on Derek Chauvin is in, a jury of his peers finding him guilty. ‘Believe your eyes,’ said the prosecutor — and they did. Most likely, however, this is not the last word in a case that has forced us to look at those 9 minutes and 29 seconds as a reflection of where we are and what we don’t want to become as a nation. As we have seen just in recent days and weeks, it has not stopped deadly confrontations between the police and Black men. But tonight, the family of George Floyd has received justice in a Minneapolis courtroom. What happens on America’s streets might tell us if there is a deeper reckoning in the tragedy of George Floyd."
"We hope that this verdict brings George Floyd’s loved ones a sense of justice," wrote Actors Equity president Kate Shindle and executive director Mary McColl, in a statement. "We also hope that this conviction carries forth the message that Black lives matter, and George Floyd’s life mattered. Equity joins with Black voices to demand structural policing reforms, in Minneapolis and nationwide, to prevent deadly acts of racist violence."
