Genre-bending Downtown Los Angeles restaurant Broken Spanish closed last summer, one of the city’s biggest dining losses as the ongoing coronavirus continues to rip through the industry at large. Chef/owner Ray Garcia spent years working an all-LA menu that jointly played on the flavors of Mexico and of Southern California, turning out dishes like chicharrón with blue corn tortillas or (during the days of takeout and delivery only) oxtail burritos and tamales.
Now Eater has learned that Garcia and company are back in action, returning Broken Spanish to the city’s dining landscape just as on-site outdoor dining picks up once again. The restaurant won’t be in Downtown, though; it’s landing a weeks-long residency at NeueHouse in Hollywood.
For those unfamiliar, NeueHouse is a private membership club that doubles as a modern office filled with rentable workspace, complete with shared space and dining areas and a rotating calendar of cultural events. The towering property at 6121 Sunset Boulevard, just blocks from the main Walk of Fame drag, will host Broken Spanish from February 25 through the end of March.
As for the food, reps for NeueHouse and Broken Spanish tell Eater that the menu will be a creative reflection of the restaurant’s previous hits — think hand-pressed tortillas with black lentils, or duck albondigas with nopales, plus that unstoppable chicharrón — along with new, seasonal dishes and cocktails.
Broken Spanish at NeueHouse will operate outdoors with necessary COVID-19 protocols in place, as part of an ongoing collaboration series with other chefs and restaurants brought on by the company. Reservations for the dinner series, which begins February 25, can be made on Resy.
