Christina Applegate revealed in August 2021 that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
Unfortunately, the “Dead to Me” star is far from the first celebrity living with MS. Many stars who have been diagnosed with the disease have publicly shared the intimate details of their battle, including the side effects of treatment.
Here is a list of celebrities fighting against MS:
Christina Applegate
“Anchorman” star Christina Applegate shared on Twitter that she had been diagnosed with MS.
“Hi friends. A few months ago I was diagnosed with MS. It’s been a strange journey. But I have been so supported by people that I know who also have this condition,” Applegate, 49, wrote. “It’s been a tough road. But as we all know, the road keeps going. Unless some a–hole blocks it.”
She asked for privacy following her revelation.
Selma Blair
Selma Blair, who co-starred in “The Sweetest Thing” with Applegate, shared her MS diagnosis in 2018. One year later, she bravely walked the 2019 Vanity Fair Oscar Party red carpet with a cane after providing a candid update on her health journey.
“Going out, being sociable holds a heavy price. My brain is on fire. I am freezing,” she shared on social media. “We feel alone with it even though the loving support has been a god send and appreciated. People write me asking how I do it. I do my best.”
Jack Osbourne
Jack Osbourne was diagnosed with MS in 2012 at age 26, just weeks after his oldest daughter, Pearl, was born.
In 2021, the former reality star said he was feeling “great” despite the disease, telling People, “I’m feeling really, really well, you know, I haven’t had any significant MS flare-ups in a long time. I exercise a lot. I do a bunch of jujitsu. I’m great.”
Jamie-Lynn Sigler
Former “Sopranos” star Jamie-Lynn Sigler announced in 2016 she secretly had been battling multiple sclerosis for 15 years.
“I can’t walk for a long period of time without resting. I cannot run. No superhero roles for me,” laughed Sigler. “Stairs? I can do them, but they’re not the easiest. When I walk, I have to think about every single step, which is annoying and frustrating.”
After welcoming two children, Sigler shared that MS has made her realize how strong she is.
“I am there for [my kids] each and every day,” she said.
Montel Williams
Former talk show host Montel Williams shared his MS diagnosis in 1999, revealing he had been fighting it for 20 years.
“This disease is not going to stop me,” the bald host of the former nationally syndicated “Montel Williams Show” declared. “I’ve probably had it for 20 years, but it’s been misdiagnosed for 10.”
Neil Cavuto
Fox News personality Neil Cavuto has battled and recovered from several diseases, including multiple sclerosis. The famed “Cavuto: Coast to Coast” host disclosed his MS diagnosis after beating stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
“At first, I felt somewhat self-absorbed and wondered, ‘Why me?'” Cavuto said. “Then I made the decision not to let MS define me.”
Teri Garr
Actress Teri Garr wasn’t diagnosed with MS until 1999, but she felt symptoms far earlier— in 1983. She didn’t go public with the diagnosis until 2002, when she appeared on “Larry King Live.”
“When things slowed down, it was either the MS or that I’m a stinking actress, so I chose to believe it’s the MS,” she said. “There’s definitely fear and misunderstanding out there about what MS is, and that’s one of the reasons why it’s so important to me to go out and talk about it.”
Ann Romney
Ann Romney, the wife of former presidential candidate Mitt Romney, was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS in 1998. Ann since has dedicated her self to spreading awareness and fundraising for the autoimmune disease and even established the Ann Romney Center for Neurologic Diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
Art Alexakis
Everclear rocker Art Alexakis shared his MS diagnosis with fans in an open letter in 2019, three years after his diagnosis.
Alexakis first learned of his diagnosis weeks after an automobile accident when he went to the doctor complaining of numbness. What he thought was a pinched nerve was actually a form of multiple sclerosis (RRMS).
“I have had it for anywhere between 10 to 20 years,” he wrote. “It explains why I have had balance and gait problems for the last ten years, it helps explain why I have had a higher sensitivity to heat and cold, and why I don’t have the energy, vigor, and razor-sharp memory that I had ten years ago. I thought it was just me getting older.”
Alan and David Osmond
Father and son Alan and David Osmond are both battling multiple sclerosis. David was diagnosed in 2006 with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, the most common form of MS, when he was 26. His father, a founding member of The Osmonds, has a less common version of the autoimmune disease called primary-progressive multiple sclerosis.
