Western New York’s film scene is going to get a boost with two new film studio facilities to be built in Buffalo, NY. Both are expected to also boost the local economy with the hope that Hollywood will come calling.

The first site to be announced is a new film and TV production studio to be built at Niagara Street on the city’s west side, according to WKBW.com. Great Point Capital Management, run by Hallmark Channel founder Robert Halmi and Fehmi Zeko, is partnering with Rich Industries on the $50 million project. This will be their third film studio project in New York state.

The studio will be built on former factory land and will go up in two phases. Upon completion it will include two 20,000-square-feet stages and 70,000-square-feet of office space. The first phase of the Great Point studio is projected to be completed by fall of 2021.

In the fall of 2020, another film studio project was announced, this time in South Buffalo. The latest Buffalo film studio project will be spearheaded by Emmy-nominated writer and producer Matt Fleckenstein, who is also a Buffalo native. Fleckenstein is a multiple Emmy-nominated writer, and producer who moved to LA after graduating from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Communications.

His company, Buffalo Studios, will be leading the development of 27-acres on South Park Avenue into a $75 million film studio. Buffalo Business First reports that phase one will clear 10 acres of the former steel mill and build a complex on it that will house six soundstages, one as large as 20,000 square feet. The entire facility plans to be fully outfitted not only to make live action films, but will also include animation studios.

Fleckenstein’s credits include writing and producing for multiple family shows, including “iCarly,” “Clifford the Big Red Dog” and Nickelodeon’s “Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn.” He told the Newhouse School that during the coronavirus pandemic, while live filming has stalled, animation projects shifted to working remotely and has kept him busy.

Buffalo Studios will also be partnering with the University at Buffalo to give students educational opportunities in the industry.

“The goal with that is a place that you can come in and learn,” Fleckenstein told the Buffalo News. “And when they graduate, we’re increasing that crew base every year.”

Buffalo Studios already has its first project on the line as well: “Brother’s Keeper,” a new television series about funk singer Rick James and his brother LeRoi Johnson growing up in the projects of Buffalo before finding international success as a musician and painter, respectively.

Great Point’s studio and Buffalo Studios will add to the filmmaking landscape alongside existing Buffalo Filmworks. Buffalo Filmworks is where Jon Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place Part II” filmed and their website says they are the largest major motion picture film studio in Upstate NY.

The Buffalo News reports that Buffalo Filmworks will also be expanding with a new Stage 4 opening likely in 2022. Their newest stage is slated to become one of the longest motion picture sound stages in the world.
