Box Office: 'The Marksman' Takes Out 'Wonder Woman 1984' - Hollywood Reporter

The new action thriller stars Liam Neeson and is directed by Robert Lorenz, Clint Eastwood's longtime collaborator.

Liam Neeson's latest action thriller The Marksman dominated a quiet Martin Luther King Day box office with an estimated four-day opening of $3.7 million, including $3.2 million for three-day weekend.

The Marksman is directed by Robert Lorenz, Clint Eastwood's longtime collaborator and stars Neeson as an Arizona rancher and former Marine who rescues a young boy from the clutches of a Mexican cartel. Open Road, also home of Neeson's recent pandemic pic Honest Thief,  is handling the film domestically.

Amid the ongoing COVID-19 crisis and widespread theater closures, Marskman played best in the South and drew an older crowd, with 33 percent of ticket buyers over the age of 45, according to PostTrak.

Neeson's movie ended Wonder Woman 1984's four-weekend rule at the top of the domestic chart. WW84, falling to No. 3 in its fifth outing, was also beat by The Croods: The New Age.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation's Croods 2 placed second in its eighth weekend with an estimated $2.2 million for the three days and $2.9 million for the four as it crossed the $40 million mark domestically.

The animated pic finished Sunday with a North American total of $40.2 million and $134.8 million globally. Croods 2 has held up especially in cinemas well despite being available on premium VOD in the U.S., and was up 13 percent over the MLK holiday weekend.

WW84 grossed an estimated $2.6 million for the four-day MLK weekend for a domestic cume of 35.8, according to Warner Bros. Overseas, WW84 grossed has earned $105.9 million for $141.7 million globally.

In a controversial move, Warners WW84 made the Christmas Day superhero sequel available on HBO Max and in cinemas the same day because of the COVID-19 crisis and shuttered cinemas in many major markets.Elsewhere, at the domestic box office,

Universal's News of the World placed fourth with an estimated $1.1 million for the three days and $1.3 million for the four days for a domestic tally of $8.7 million.

Sony's Monster Hunter rounded out the top five with an estimated four-day gross of $1.1 million and domestic total of $9.2 million through Monday.

Overseas, Disney's Soul became the third-highest grossing Pixar title of all time in China upon finishing Sunday with $43.1 million in ticket sales. The animated family film, which is only playing on Disney+ in the U.S. and certain international markets, has grossed a total of $57.4 million at the foreign box office.
