Fool me once …
Celebrities are once again claiming they will flee the country if President Trump beats former Vice President Joe Biden — four years after a similarly vowed glitterati exodus.
When polls predicted a landslide victory for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2016, more than a dozen celebs, including Jon Stewart, Cher, Miley Cyrus, Samuel L. Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg and Snoop Dogg, declared they’d be heading for the hills if Trump won.
Chelsea Handler was the only star to come close to making good on the promise with a preemptive purchase of a home out of the country. But she later flip-flopped, the Hollywood Reporter wrote in 2016 after Trump’s win.
The 2020 presidential election has brought a new crop of celebs who are considering leaving if the US keeps its MAGA hat on for another four years.
Bruce Springsteen
The New Jersey native and “Born in the U.S.A.” vocalist says he will head down under if Trump wins.
“If Trump is reelected – which he will not be; I’m predicting right now he’s gonna lose – if by some happenstance he should be, I’ll see you on the next plane,” Springsteen told Australian media in October during a virtual chat.
The rocker hasn’t been shy about his disdain for the president and frequently uses his E Street Radio program on SiriusXM to criticize the administration, saying last week the White House is in need of an “exorcism,” USA Today reported.
The 71-year-old said he would “consider” moving to Australia if he had to endure Trump for another four years.
“I love Australia,” Springsteen said, according to the Daily Telegraph.
“Every time we have nothing but good times down there. It’s always a treat to come. Love the people, love the geography, great place for motorcycle trips, it’s close to our hearts.”
Tommy Lee
The famed Mötley Crüe drummer has long lambasted Trump and his policies, but the hatred went to new heights when he told The Big Issue in October he’d move to Europe if the former reality star gets a second term.
“Dude, I swear to God if that happens then I’m coming over to visit the UK. I’m out of here. I’ll go back to my motherland, go back to Greece and get a house on one of the islands,” the rock star told the outlet.
“The thing that stings the most is that I feel like we’re embarrassing. I feel like people in Europe and the rest of the world look at America and think: ‘What the f–k are you guys doing over there? Stop voting for celebrities and get someone real to run the country.’”
When Trump and first lady Melania Trump tested positive for COVID-19, Lee took to Twitter to call it an act of “karma.”
Ricky Martin
The ’90s star and “Living La Vida Loca” singer has been an avid campaigner for Biden and recently told Variety that he and his husband considered leaving the country if Trump wins big on election night, but would rather stay in the US to fight.
“We just take it one day at a time and we’ve had plans like we might leave the country, but no. We have to stay here and we have to fight for our rights and what we believe,” the Latino pop star said.
“I’ve been supporting Biden forever … I think he is the only option we have and he is great and he has been in politics all his life. This is the moment. We all need to get together and be loud about the course of this nation.”
John Legend and Chrissy Teigen
The couple has considered leaving the US if Trump is re-elected, telling Cosmopolitan U.K. in September they are “exhausted” from the president’s “embarrassing” leadership.
“Every once in a while you think about it,” Legend told the outlet.
“We were born and raised here, all of our families are here. It would be hard to leave. But I don’t know what one’s supposed to do when you have a leader who is trying to destroy democracy.”
He said if Trump continues his “project” of destroying democracy and has any success, a move out of the country is not off the table.
“You’d have to think about going somewhere that is a true democracy, that has respect for the rule of law and human rights,” he said.
No word yet on where they’d like to go.
