There’s no question that Ryan Murphy, in addition to being one of the most prolific creators working in Hollywood today, also has a keen eye for visual detail. Time and again in his numerous series, he’s shown that he knows what kinds of clothes and fabrics look good in front of the camera, and it is precisely the visual design that often makes his creations so utterly compelling.
His new series, Hollywood, set during the golden age of moviemaking, is no exception, and throughout its run, there are numerous outfits that not only manage to dazzle but also capture the glamor of this bygone period of moviemaking.
10 The Outfits At Ernie’s
The “gas station” run by Ernie is, of course, little more than a glorified prostitution ring, where the powerful and wealthy of Hollywood find companionship. However, there’s no denying that the men that he employs, as well as Ernie himself, look very dapper in their gas attendant outfits.
The outfits are a reminder that, in Ryan Murphy’s hands, even something more than a little seedy can still manage to look quite glamorous.
9 Anna May Wong’s Golden Dressing Gown
One of the central storylines of the series involves Anna May Wong, an actual historical figure who, the series rightly points out, was largely stereotyped by Hollywood and kept from achieving her true potential as an actress.
One of the first times that the audience meets her she is dressed in a golden dressing gown. It is, of course, a truly stunning piece of clothing, with a shine so intense that it almost feels as if the fabric can be touched. Its metallic luster also suggests that Wong is not a woman to be taken lightly.
8 Hattie McDaniel’s Oscars Outfit
In addition to Wong, the series also includes several other historical figures from real Hollywood, including Hattie McDaniel, noted for being the first African American woman to win an Oscar.
In the series, she makes an appearance at the Oscars, dressed in this truly phenomenal number. It's an exquisite color, and Queen Latifah manages to make the outfit her own, moving with all of her signature grace and confidence throughout the scene in which she appears.
7 Jeanne Crandall’s Oscars Gown
Though she’s one of the more minor characters in the series, Jeanne Crandall (played by Mira Sorvino) is also one of the most tragic, a woman who can’t quite seem to get the success that she so clearly deserves. At last, however, with a blessing from Avis, she manages to begin her climb.
When she appears at the Oscars in a blue dress that shimmers in the dazzling lights, it seems to portend all of the great things that lie ahead of her in her career.
6 Avis’s Leopard Print
Avis is one of the series’ most powerful figures (and no wonder, considering that she’s played by none other than Miss Patti LuPone).
It probably goes without saying that she has some of the best outfits in the entire show, but her leopard print one is definitely one of the best. It seems to not-so-subtly suggest that here is a woman of powerful strength, someone who isn’t afraid to use her claws if it means getting what she wants from the studio system that has already used her.
5 Ellen’s Black And White Outfit With The Hat
Holland Taylor is one of those actresses who never seems to get quite the respect that she deserves but who still manages to own every role she plays. That is certainly true of Ellen, the kind-hearted, warm, and generous higher-up at Ace Studios.
This outfit manages to capture the sort of down-to-earth charm that Ellen always seems to have, as she coaches the young people in her charge and tries to bring out their fullest potential as potential stars.
4 Archie’s Oscars Suit
What’s not to love about the character Archie? As a gay man of color, he seems doomed to be forever sidelined in Hollywood. However, through persistence and a little bit of luck, he manages to win an Oscar for his screenplay.
In addition to being open about his relationship with Rock Hudson, he also wears this marvelous white suit, which catches the light in the theater and reminds the entire audience that he’s not ashamed of who he is.
3 Ernie’s Oscars Outfit
In less capable hands, Ernie would probably have been a cad of a character that’s almost unredeemable. Fortunately, Dylan McDermott brings out the best in this character. His outfit at the Oscars is worthy of particular note.
It’s sleek and elegant, suggesting that there is more to this man than meets the eye, and the scarf that he wears brings out that little bit of rakishness that is so much a part of Ernie’s charm as a character.
2 Camille’s Oscars Outfit
Camille is, in some ways, one of the series’ most important characters. She is, after all, the star of the film that the series focuses on.
It’s unsurprising, therefore, that her Oscars outfit would reflect her importance as a character. Its soft pink shade brings out the shades of her character, while its glistening fabric also has just a hit of hardness, a suggestion that this is a formidable young woman who is not to be taken lightly by the powers that be in Hollywood.
1 Avis’s Oscars Outfit
It’s probably not at all surprising that Patti LuPone, one of the most powerful presences in the entire series, should also have one of the best outfits.
Given that the Oscars is one of the most important nights-not only for Avis, but also the movie industry as a whole - it makes sense that she dresses up for the occasion. In fact, with her outfit, she could, with some degree of accuracy, claim that she is the queen of Hollywood itself.
