200 protest George Floyd’s death in North Hollywood - LA Daily News

About 200 peaceful protesters angry over the death of George Floyd demonstrated for hours at the North Hollywood Recreation Center on Tuesday.

Chanting “Black lives matter,” and “I can’t breathe,” the protestors cheered as drivers honked their horns in support.

Compared to other protests across the city over the last few days, police kept largely out of sight — five Los Angeles Police Department cruisers set up in the park just across from the protest for a few hours, then left.

LAPD officials — chastised in public for several days of violent enforcement of curfews and dispersal orders — appeared to be backing off on Tuesday.

Lines of riot police made way for thousands of protesters marching on Hollywood Boulevard in the afternoon.

Chief Michel Moore apologized again Tuesday for blaming looters for the death of Floyd. Hundreds of speakers criticized the chief in a virtual police commission meeting that morning.

Some protesters in North Hollywood on Tuesday said they’d been at several demonstrations over the last few days. They noticed a change in LAPD tactics this week.

“I was at demonstrations before — they were like this, peaceful. Then there was an instigation by police,” said Dakari Shea, 24. “I was tear-gassed, I was shot (with) rubber bullets at every protest before this one.”

She said she expected the same treatment Tuesday.

With about an hour to go before the L.A. County ordered curfew at 6 p.m., police had not shown up.

Protesters instead got raised fists and honks from a Metro bus driver and a paramedic, who flashed his lights as he drove by.

Marcus Chavez, 31, said he was at the protest in Van Nuys on Monday, too.

He said he’s had encounters with LAPD before that left him shaken. And he felt that Floyd’s death reminded him of instances of police abuse in L.A.

“It’s just another incident where a daughter lost a father and a mother lost a son,” he said.

Shea said she, too, had lost trust in LAPD.

“There have been times that I needed police, and when I called, I was the one arrested,” Shea said. “There’s something wrong with the police. They’re the ones that have to change — not us.”
