Although the outcome of the Oscars themselves is often unpredictable, one thing is for certain: Being named Oscars best dressed deserves an award of its own. 

Dating all the way back to the 1950s, the Oscars red carpet is an opportunity for stars to make a statement using fashion, whether it’s about a political cause, their latest project, or relationship to their personal style. In 1955, Grace Kelly’s silk Edith Head dress separated her from her fellow actors because it was created by a costume designer rather than a fashion house, landing her on Oscars best-dressed lists for years to come. 

This year, on the Oscars 2022 red carpet, stars pushed the limits, working with their favorite designers, hairstylists, and makeup artists to ensure they’d be camera ready for Hollywood’s biggest night. Arriving in bright and bold colors, creative silhouettes, jaw-dropping necklines, and gowns with floor-length hems, all of this year’s Oscar nominees and attendees showed up dressed to impress, but only a select few can be considered the Oscars best dressed.
