Takei, best known for both his role in Star Trek and his absolute 馃敟 tweets, was 5 years old when he, along with his family, was forced into a Japanese internment camp during World War II. He has since used that experience as fuel for his passionate stance on immigration reform. During the Trump administration, he was a vocal critic of Trump's rhetoric towards immigration, and has been particularly critical of family separation policies.

“I consider it my responsibility as an American citizen to actively participate, particularly because I know my childhood imprisonment — the unjust imprisonment,” he told ABC News. “If we don't participate, if we don't educate our fellow Americans to the vulnerability of our democracy, how fragile it can be, then we're not being responsible citizens.”

Takei and his husband Brad also are fierce supporters of marriage equality.
