Celebrities have reacted with anger to Texas' abortion law following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision not to block the strictest prohibitions to the procedure in the country.
Actors, musicians and other public figures joined abortion rights groups in expressing outrage over the last few days at the passage of Senate Bill 8, which bans abortions after a fetal heartbeat has been detected.
Effectively banning abortion from six weeks of pregnancy, the justices' refusal to block the law, although they did not rule on whether it was constitutional, has caused controversy.

Equally contentious is the ban which makes it illegal to "aid or abet" an abortion, potentially incriminating doctors, health care workers and even those who drove the women to the procedure.
The actor Reese Witherspoon tweeted: "I stand with the women of Texas who have the Constitutional right to make decisions about their health and their own bodies. #BansOffOurBodies.'"
In an Instagram live, Grammy-award-winning singer Lizzo gave the law short shrift, saying, "You have the right to do what you want to do, but the people who are making laws need to stay the f**k out of people's bodies business."
Comedian and actor Amy Schumer shared a link to a petition created by Planned Parenthood and tweeted that the law "gives politicians, neighbors, and even strangers the right to sue those who provide—or just help patients get—abortion after 6 wks. The time to fight for our reproductive health & rights is now!"
The same message was shared on Twitter by celebrities including actors Alyssa Milano, Emmy Rossum and activist Barbara Malmet.
Meanwhile, singer Cyndi Lauper said on Instagram: "We have to fight for everyone's reproductive freedom."
She was among dozens of celebrities such as the musician Pink, who shared an image on social media that contained the text, "I stand in solidarity with Texans & people everywhere seeking reproductive freedom."
"This ban, #SB8, will be the blueprint for bans across the US," Pink wrote, "unless we do something about it."
Actor and producer Kerry Washington tweeted: "We should all be able to make our own decisions about our health & future. We have to fight for everyone's reproductive freedom." Meanwhile, Rosanna Arquette tweeted: "I've just turned down a film I love cause it shoots in Texas."
Planned Parenthood, which Newsweek has contacted for comment, did get a boost when a Texas judge gave a ruling that would temporarily stop its clinics from being targeted by lawsuits from an anti-abortion group.
However, Maya Guerra Gamble's ruling expires on September 17 and does not invalidate the law whose passage is likely to embolden moves for stricter abortion laws in other GOP-led states.
