Here’s a fun fact: Over the past decade or so Georgia has become something of a hub for Hollywood film and television production. In a quest for Georgia’s generous tax credits, Hollywood has beaten a path to their door to film dozens of films and TV shows on the cheap. Tyler Perry has established one of the largest production studios in the world in Atlanta. Business was booming and showed no signs of stopping, until...
The Georgia Republican Party decided to go all-in on Trump’s big lie and pass a flotilla of repressive voter suppression laws including, but not limited to, making it illegal to offer food and water to someone waiting in line to vote. It’s a truly reprehensible act and plenty of folks outside the state GOP hive mind said so. A number of film and TV stars have voiced their displeasure over the whole trying to subvert our democracy thing and announced they have no intention of working in the Peach State for the foreseeable future. Then, in swoops Phil Murphy with an offer they can’t refuse.
Murphy sent a letter to a slew of studios offering up New Jersey’s services as an alternative on-location destination. Jersey will offer competitive tax credits and free and open elections should you choose to film here. We’re not New Zealand but we’ve got just about everything you could want. Swamps? Check. Farmland? Sure. Giant pine forests for burying dead mobsters? Absolutely.
