Programming will be announced May 11, and will include four free concerts.

Concerts at The Hollywood Bowl will soon be not just a memory, but a reality.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic on Friday revealed that the outdoor venue will welcome limited capacity audiences of approximately 4,000 people starting in May, working toward larger capacities later in the summer as safety guidelines amid California's reopening plan are modified.

Programming will be announced May 11 and the season will be kicked off by four free concerts in May and June. Invited healthcare workers, first responders and essential workers will be given first priority for the free concerts, three of which are made possible through a partnership with Kaiser Permanente. The fourth is set to feature Thundercat and Flying Lotus.

In July, the Hollywood Bowl will begin fourteen weeks of concerts including Fourth of July fireworks, a sing-a-long Sound of Music event and a Tchaikovsky event.

"I cannot describe the joy and hope that I feel at the thought of returning to the stage with our musicians, in front of a live audience," said LA Philharmonic music and artistic director Gustavo Dudamel. "We have found so many extraordinary and creative ways to share music together over the course of the pandemic, but truly nothing can take the place of performing in person."

Meanwhile, the LAPhil's other venue, The Ford, will resume concerts in late July and run for fifteen weeks — 20 percent of which will be free to the public. Programming for the Ford will be announced May 25.

"After more than a year of tremendous hardship and incredible demonstrations of resilience and care across our community, we are looking forward to reuniting our audiences with one another and with live music at the Hollywood Bowl and The Ford," said chief executive officer Chad Smith. "We are wasting no time in hiring seasonal staff and implementing policies and procedures designed for the safety of our audiences, artists, and staff."

Earlier this week, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced the state's plan to lift most pandemic restrictions, which were among the strictest in the country, on businesses and workplaces by June 15. "With more than 20 million vaccines administered across the state, it is time to turn the page on our tier system and begin looking to fully reopen California's economy," Newsom said in the press conference. "We can now begin planning for our lives post-pandemic."

As far as other re-openings in the area of entertainment, Universal Studios and Disneyland both revealed plans to welcome back theme park guests on April 16 and April 30, respectively.
