HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – One person was taken into custody Thursday morning in Hollywood after shots were fired during a confrontation with a police officer, authorities confirmed.
According to authorities, an officer was working downtown around 2:45 a.m. when he was involved in a confrontation with the suspect in the 2000 block of Hollywood Boulevard.
“At some point in the confrontation the officer felt threatened, and he did discharge his weapon and he did request assistance over the radio,” Officer Christian Lata said.
Police said the suspect then fled the scene in a vehicle, which he eventually crashed in the area of Harrison Street and South 15th Avenue.
I came outside to go to work, you know rushing, and I said I think that’s my car,” said Jessica Long, whose car was struck during the crash. “It’s kind of stunning to see a part of your life taken from you, but it’s just a car.”
The suspect was later found hiding in the backyard of a nearby home, police said.
He was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital to be treated for injuries he sustained from the crash.
Police said no one was injured as a result of the shooting.
No other details about the initial confrontation were immediately released.
