Michigan is full of celebrities who call the state home. Some were born and raised in the Great Lakes State while others were born in Michigan but raised elsewhere. Then there are those famous faces who you probably think were born here, but weren’t.

We recently showed you 30 celebrities who you might be surprised to learn were born in Michigan. Now we’ve compiled this list of some famous faces who you may be shocked to learn were not actually born in the state.

12. Eminem

One of Michigan’s most famous faces was actually born in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1972. The rapper spent much of his early childhood living in both Detroit and Kansas City before permanently moving to the Motor City when he was 12. He attended Lincoln High School in Warren in the late 80s. Eminem currently lives in Clinton Township in Metro Detroit.

11. Aretha Franklin

One of the greatest singers who ever lived was a proud Michigander who was born in Memphis, Tennessee. Her family moved to Buffalo when she was two before coming to Detroit when she was five. The “Queen of Soul” lived in Detroit until her death in 2018 at the age of 76. She won 18 Grammy Awards and was the first woman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

10. Jeff Daniels

This actor and musician was born in Athens, Georgia in 1955. His family moved to Chelsea, where he was raised, at an early age. Daniels still lives there. The star known for “Terms of Endearment,” “Dumb and Dumber,” “Speed,” “Pleasantville” and “The Newsroom,” founded the Purple Rose Theater Company in Chelsea.

9. James Earl Jones

The voice of Darth Vader was born in Arkabutla, Mississippi in 1931. He was raised by his grandparents in Jackson, Michigan. Jones graduated from the University of Michigan in 1955. The actor has won three Tony Awards, a Grammy Award, and two Primetime Emmy Awards.

8. Gillian Anderson

The actress known for playing Dana Scully was born in Chicago in 1968. Her family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan when she was 11. She attended Fountain Elementary and City High-Middle School. Along with “X-Files,” Anderson is known for her roles in many movies and TV shows. Most recently, she stars in the Netflix comedy/drama “Sex Education.” You can also see her on season 4 of “The Crown” as Margaret Thatcher.

7. Ken Burns

This famous documentary filmmaker was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1953. He moved to Michigan when his father began teaching at the University of Michigan. Burns graduated from Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor. His most notable documentaries include “Baseball,” “The Civil War” and “The Roosevelts.”

6. Derek Jeter

The Major League Baseball Hall of Famer was born in Pequannock Twp., New Jersey in 1974. He grew up in Kalamazoo and attended Kalamazoo Central before spending 20 years with the New York Yankees. Jeter was a 14-time all-star and a 5-time World Series champion. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer and part owner of the Miami Marlins.

5. Gerald Ford

The 38th President of the United States was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1913. His mother moved him to Grand Rapids when he was very young. Ford attended the University of Michigan in the early 1930s. He played linebacker and long snapper. The team had undefeated seasons and national championships while he played there in 1932 and 1933. He passed away in 2006.

4. Joe Louis

One of Michigan’s greatest athletes of all-time was born in LaFayette, Alabama in 1914. The legendary boxer’s family moved to Detroit when he was 12. Lewis held the world heavyweight championship from 1937 until 1949 when he retired before making a comeback. During that time, he also served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. From 1934 to 1951, Louis had 71 bouts, winning 68, 54 by knockouts. He passed away in 1981.

3. Robin Williams

This legendary actor and comedian was born in Chicago in 1951. He moved to Bloomfield Hills at age 12 with his family. He attended Detroit Country Day High School where he wrestled and was even elected class president. His family left Michigan for California when he was 16. Williams passed away in 2014. His career highlights include “Mork and Mindy,” “Popeye,” “Good Morning, Vietnam,” “Dead Poets Society,” “Patch Adams,” “Good Will Hunting” and “Night at the Museum.”

2. Michael Phelps

The most decorated Olympian ever was born in Baltimore in 1985. Winner of 28 medals, including 23 gold medals, Phelps attended the University of Michigan in the mid 2000s, though he never graduated. The five-time Olympian also never competed for the Wolverines. He swam for Club Wolverine while training for coach Bob Bowman. He was also a volunteer coach for the Wolverines.

1. Tim Allen

One of Michigan’s most famous faces, the “Tool Man” was born in Denver in 1953. Allen’s family moved to Birmingham, Michigan when he was a teen. He went to Seaholm High School before attending Central Michigan University. Allen would transfer to Western Michigan where he graduated in 1976. You know the voice of the Pure Michigan campaign from “Home Improvement,” “Last Man Standing,” the “Toy Story” series of films, the “Santa Clause” movies, “Galaxy Quest” and much more.
