Celebrities have donated more than $1.25 million and raised even more for Black Lives Matter, raising the stature of a group that just years ago was seen as too controversial for mainstream stars.
The organization has provided the message behind nationwide protests over the killing of George Floyd and is behind the growing call to defund the police, which Democratic leaders, including presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden

Democrats are working on other reforms and introduced legislation on Monday to ban chokeholds, eliminate the legal shield protecting police from lawsuits, and mandate the use of body cameras nationwide, among other provisions.

Black Lives Matter did not respond to The Hill’s request for comment about the surge in donations.
Here are the celebrities who have donated to Black Lives Matter:
BTS
The K-pop group BTS donated $1 million and called on fans to match the donation. The hashtag #MatchAMillion surfaced on Saturday and by Monday evening, $1.3 million was raised.
BTS tweeted on Thursday, “we will stand together.#BlackLivesMatter,” and its music label Big Hit Entertainment confirmed the group’s donation.
John Cena

Wrestler and actor John Cena participated in BTS’s match program. He tweeted on Monday that he was “very happy to join #BTSARMY” in the effort to match the group’s $1 million donation.
He didn’t specify the amount and a spokesperson didn’t respond to The Hill’s request for comment.
Lady Gaga
Singer Lady Gaga announced on Instagram last week that she was donating to multiple organizations, including Black Lives Matter, and didn’t specify the amount.
“I encourage you to learn about the important work they do and how you can get involved,” she wrote. A spokesperson didn’t respond to The Hill’s request for the amount she donated.
The Weeknd
Singer Abel Tesfaye, who goes by the Weeknd, announced on Instagram that he donated to Black Lives Matter. The singer gave $200,000 and posted his contribution receipt on June 1.
He posted receipts for donations to other organizations, including National Bail Out and former professional football player Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp.
Braden Holtby
Washington Capitals goalie Braden Holtby and his wife Brandi gave $5,000 to Black Lives Matter DC. The couple launched an auction on Monday to benefit Black Lives Matter DC and the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and donated $5,000 to each organization.
They also said they will match the funds raised by the auction, which runs until Friday, the NHL announced.
Anna Kendrick
Actress Anna Kendrick tweeted last week a list of organizations fighting against racism and police brutality, including Black Lives Matter.
“If you can, please join me in donating,” she wrote, and didn’t specify the amount she gave. A spokesperson didn’t respond to The Hill’s request for comment.
Chris Evans
Actor Chris Evans, who plays Marvel’s Captain America, retweeted a video of police mistreating protesters that Kendrick posted on May 31 and said he donated to Black Lives Matter. He didn’t specify the amount.
“If you have the means, I hope you do too,” he wrote. A spokesperson didn’t respond to The Hill’s request for comment.
Other donations

Celebrities gave to other causes including the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, where Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Angelina Jolie and Ellen DeGeneres donated, among others.
Harry Styles, Chrissy Teigen, Drake, Steve Carell and others donated to bail out protesters, while civil rights advocacy organization Color of Change received donations from Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Aniston, among others.
Basketball star Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand pledged to give $100 million over the next 10 years to “organizations dedicated to ensuring racial equality, social justice and greater access to education.” Jordan is expected to announce soon where funds will be directed.
