HOLLYWOOD, CA — "Growing up in Los Angeles, The Hollywood Roosevelt was a household name," said Nancy Silverton, renown chef, restaurateur and James Beard Foundation Award winner, who selected the historic Hollywood hotel for her new eatery, The Barish.

So how fitting that the newly opened, Italian steakhouse, The Barish, sits in the hotel's landmarked lobby, featuring a menu of dry-aged cuts of beef and dishes inflected with the California-Italian flavors for which Silverton is famous.

"The hotel's eclectic clientele and notable history felt like a fantastic match for my cuisine," she said.

Paying homage to her L.A. roots, the iconic, Tinseltown property and her family heritage as Jewish immigrants raising animals on "The Barish Farm," Silverton and the restaurant designers decked the eatery with photographs and cherished personal heirlooms.

"The Barish is meant to inhabit the timelessness of the old-Hollywood institution it occupies – one that played host to the first Academy Awards," Silverton said. "I'm excited to honor both my family's heritage and the hotel's with this new restaurant concept."

The 110-seat dining room is anchored by a central wood-fire hearth and open-kitchen set-up, with Spanish Colonial Revival details, featuring custom designed banquettes and an overall, vintage-inspired "Italian countryside" vibe, courtesy of Los Angeles-based design firm Nickey Kehoe. Keeping with the ambiance, Silverton added some tabletop pieces she acquired from European flea markets.

The Barish serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with such menu stand-outs as pasta al forno – baked pastas cooked in the wood fire, grilled abalone mushrooms with porcini butter, iceberg wedge with trufflebert hazelnuts, salt-baked steak fries, and Porterhouse steak, dry-aged for 40 days. Beverage options include more than 30 wines.

The Historic Lobby offers casual dining options, as guests can lounge on orange and teal velvet couches while enjoying finger-food, including house-made Kennebec potato chips with onion dip and smoked trout roe, and Caesar salad of individually dressed spears of chicories.

Silverton, a San Fernando Valley native, made her name in the industry after a lengthy career as a baker and pastry chef and founder of the widely acclaimed Campanile restaurant (1989-2012) on South La Brea Avenue and La Brea bakery in Los Angeles. She recently starred as a judge on Tournament of Champions II, a bracket-style cooking challenge on the Food Network.

Her last restaurant venture, opened in 2013, was the upscale Italian Chi Spacca on Melrose Avenue.

The Barish will be led by Executive Chef Armen Ayvazyan, who specializes in farm-to-table cuisine after working for Auburn in Hollywood, Chef Molly Mueller spearheading pastry and Jerald Armstrong as general manager.

"With the opening of The Barish at The Hollywood Roosevelt, we're thrilled to provide exceptional culinary experiences that match our timeless Hollywood vibe," said Don Jacinto, the hotel's managing director. "We're confident that this partnership with Nancy Silverton will breathe exciting new life into Hollywood and raise the game for hotel restaurants in Los Angeles."
